One of the critical concepts in Human Anatomy and Physiology is that the structure is aligned with the function. That said, we are ever evolving and many of our common diseases or everyday aches and pains can be linked to anatomy. For this project, students were asked to reimagine a structure of the body to improve function. This allowed students to think in depth about the function of the structure they chose and how it could be redesigned, and what consequences a redesign might elicit.
Each group was required to pick a structure that they thought could be redesigned and improved and then generated an infographic sharing the redesign. The infographics should include the original structure, pertinent physiology, how the structure was redesigned, why this was chosen to be redesigned it and how the physiology changes due to the redesign.
As an added benefit, this project was completed in collaboration with a class in La Ciotat, France. Dr. Arnold had the opportunity to study Marine Ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea this summer and she met many wonderful colleagues during this time, and this seemed like an ideal project to collaborate on. Dr. Arnold’s Monday section of BIO 201 had the opportunity to participate in a virtual exchange with Pascale Isoleri’s English students and share ideas. Pascale Isoleri has been teaching English in the fields of Health, Safety and Environment for the past 20 years. She works in La Ciotat, a small Mediterranean coastal city 30 kms East from Marseille at the IUT (University Institute of Technology) of AMU (Aix-Marseille University). The infographics presented will be from Jefferson State Anatomy 201 students and IUT English students. All did an amazing job of thinking creatively to “remix and reimagine” the human body!
