Classic Movies

From sound to cinematography to mise-en-scène, directors of music videos and their crews work together with the artist to create the visual rhetoric of music videos. Students in the HUM 298M course (or Classic Movies Series) created digital projects that discuss how filmmakers/artists create meaning through the visual rhetoric of music videos of their choice. Please click on the tags in the following ThingLink to access each student's project. Please keep in mind that videos may contain mature content to create valuable discussion on the themes found within the music. Our class hopes that you enjoy learning more about the aspects of film in music videos.

Music

What does MUSIC mean to you? Students currently enrolled in Jessica Kaufhold's MUS/MUL classes were asked this question, and this word cloud is the result! Nearly 100 students responded to the request to provide a one- or two-word descriptor of MUSIC...the first thing that comes to mind. Descriptors that were provided more frequently appear larger in the word cloud. Is your descriptor in there?

Theater

Theatre Appreciation students selected a well-known musical and were asked how they would change the original concept if they were in the director's chair. They could play with time, place, and even the message they wanted the audience to receive. They then created a concept poster that included new casting and design elements. The goal was for students to not only get exposure to musical theatre, but to analyze the playwright's intent and to put their own creative spin on it.
