Friday, February 8th classes proceeded as normal at Jefferson State Community College, though there was a feeling of anticipation in the air throughout the day. As soon as 7:30 p.m. rolled around, that feeling turned to celebration. 

For the first time in over forty years, Jeff State threw a Winter Formal for students to attend. Students from all campuses and age ranges were allowed to attend and bring a date, though dates were not required. Students were required to buy tickets in advance and encouraged to make a whole evening out of the event. 

The Jefferson State Community College Student Government Association organized this event, working closely with faculty and staff members to create the perfect atmosphere for the evening. The theme of the night was “Fire and Ice,” which featured the Multipurpose Room of the Health Sciences Building divided – each half adorned with either Fire- or Ice-themed decorations and hors d’oeuvres. The food and decorations were not the only things themed; several attendees decided to stick with the theme and dress up as well, culminating with the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Fire and Ice at the end of the night.

In addition to great food and décor, the night was rich in entertainment – aerial dancers welcomed guests as they entered, a DJ kept students dancing all night long, and the night was capped with a fire show featuring fire twirlers from Luminarts entertainment. 

The Fire and Ice Winter Formal was a stand-out and large success because it allowed the students attending a two-year commuter school to attend a function worthy of one at a four-year university. Events like these help to create an on-campus life for students. It was a hit and plans are already in order for the event to happen in 2020.
