Wingspan and Pioneer Con Joint Submissions

Wingspan Submission Guidelines

Written Art

  • Written work should be submitted as .doc or .docx files (no PDFs, please). Your work can be in English or Spanish. If Spanish, please provide an English translation. 
  • Genres we have published in the past include: short fiction, poetry, personal essay, journalism, prose poem, comedy sketch, screenplay, one-act stage play. However, we are not limited to these genres. If you have written something you think our audience would enjoy, please submit it. We’ll reach out to you and figure out how to classify it.
  • Due to space constraints, we must limit each submitter to no more than 3 works per category. (Limit 3 poems, 3 stories per person, etc.)
  • Each submission should be no more than 2,000 words in length (about 4 single-spaced pages).

Visual Art

  • Genres we have published in the past include: color photography, black and white photography, collage, digital painting, sketch, cricut, oil painting, pastels, mixed materials. However, we are not limited to these genres. If you have created something you think our audience would enjoy, please submit it. We’ll reach out to you and figure out how to classify it.
  • Photographs should be the highest resolution you have available. Attach .jpeg or .png files (no PDFs, please).
  • Photographs of artwork in other media should be taken against a black background with even lighting and no glare. All sides / corners of the work should be visible, and the work should be square and level in the frame.
  • Due to space constraints, we must limit each submitter to no more than 6 combined submissions total.( Limit 6 photographs or 3 photographs and 3 digital paintings, for example.)

Pioneer Con Presentations

  • Roundtable
    • A group of speakers presents a shared point of view and leads audience discussion, for a session time of 45 minutes. Proposals are submitted with names of all group members. Roundtable presentations will be held LIVE, via Zoom.
  • Panel
    • Speakers offer individual points of view for a presentation of 10-12 minutes. They are later grouped with others discussing similar topics. Panels are hosted by a volunteer moderator. Individual presentations will be recorded ahead of time and hosted on the Pioneer Con website.
  • Lecture
    • Reserved for faculty or off-campus professionals. Presentation will be 45-60 minutes. Event planners will reach out to discuss whether presentation will be live via Zoom or pre-recorded.

 Presentations may address one of the following or a topic you propose:

  • Climate Fiction
  • Horror Fiction
  • Weird Fiction
  • Medical Oddities
  • Anime
  • SF/Fantasy Video Games
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Horror, SF, Fantasy, or Weird Cinema

Presenters receive a free t-shirt. Although SKD is the English honor society, we welcome proposals from any discipline.  

Submit a 100-200-word description of your planned presentation. Tell us as much as possible about what you want to cover and whether you are an individual or a group. If you plan to have more than one presenter, provide the name of each participant. Up to five people may participate as presenters in a session.
 
Submissions due by 12 noon on Wednesday, September 23. We'll make final decisions and inform selected participants through email by September 29. The final text of the presentation must be complete by the event date.

Pioneer Con Writing Contest

  • Each submission should be no more than 2,000 words in length (about 4 single-spaced pages). 
  • Limit 3 submissions per category per person. 
  • Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 entries in each category. Winners will also be published on the Pioneer Con website and in Wingspan literary & arts magazine.
  • All submissions will be considered for Wingspan. If a work is selected, Wingspan editors will reach out to submitters to confirm their permission to publish.  
  • Written work should be submitted as .doc or .docx files (no PDFs, please). Your work can be in English or Spanish. If Spanish, please provide an English translation.
  • All rights revert to the author upon publication.

Categories

  • Essay on Pioneer Con core text. For 2021, the core texts are two short stories by keynote speaker John Mantooth. Submissions may be about EITHER story, or you may examine elements common to both. Those stories are "Shoebox Train Wreck" and "Walk the Wheat".
    • Essays should perform a literary analysis of the work, including but not limited to: discussion of a theme, profile of key characters, examination of imagery, analysis of writing style, comparison of core text to another literary work.
  • Essay on Visual Media
    • Essay should be an analysis of visual media that includes a speculative (scifi, fantasy, horror, futuristic, or weird) element. Acceptable media include film, television, video games, graphic novels, or other art.
  • Short Fiction
    • An original short story in which a speculative element is key. Sub-genres could include science fiction, fantasy, horror, weird fiction.
